Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

GGT adds context to liver and bile-duct tests, especially when ALP is raised.

What does it measure?

Gamma-glutamyl transferase is an enzyme found in several tissues, with blood testing commonly used to assess a liver or bile-duct pattern. When ALP is high, an accompanying GGT rise supports a liver contribution because bone conditions generally do not raise GGT. [1]

Before the test

Sample
A blood sample from a vein.
Preparation
Meals can affect GGT. Confirm fasting advice and mention medicines, supplements, and alcohol use if relevant.
[1]

What can the result mean?

High GGT can occur with bile-duct problems, liver disease, alcohol exposure, or certain medicines. It is sensitive to many influences and cannot identify a cause on its own. A low result is generally not a concern. GGT is not a stand-alone measure of oxidative stress or detoxification capacity. [1]

When is it useful, and how is it read?

GGT is particularly helpful when ALP is raised and the source is unclear. A concurrent GGT rise supports a liver or bile-duct explanation, while an isolated GGT rise remains nonspecific. The rest of the liver panel and the exposure history decide the next question. [1] [3]

GGT adds context to ALP. A raised GGT by itself cannot identify a cause or prove a particular exposure. [1] [2]

What can affect it?

Medicine and supplement history matters, including some antiseizure medicines. Recent alcohol intake, if relevant, should be discussed without assumptions or judgment. ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, symptoms, and previous results provide the context needed to interpret a rise. [1]

An interesting fact

GGT is not a detox score

GGT may rise for several liver-related reasons and with some medicines or alcohol exposure. A higher number cannot measure how many “toxins” are in your body or prove that you need a detox product. [1] [3]

Questions you might have

Does high GGT prove alcohol use?

No. Several liver or bile-duct conditions and some medicines can raise it. A result is not proof of alcohol use. [1]

Why compare GGT with ALP?

ALP can come from liver or bone. GGT helps assess whether an ALP rise fits a liver or bile-duct pattern. [1]

What comes next?

An isolated increase may call for review and confirmation rather than an immediate diagnosis. Your clinician can decide whether further liver testing or imaging is warranted. Avoid taking products marketed to detox the liver merely to change GGT; some supplements can themselves affect the liver. [1]
