Apolipoprotein A1

ApoA1 adds information about the protein carried in HDL particles.

What does it measure?

Apolipoprotein A1 is a major protein in HDL, a group of particles involved in moving cholesterol away from tissues. This test measures the protein, while HDL cholesterol measures cholesterol within the particles. The two results are related but are not interchangeable. [1]

Before the test

Sample
A blood sample from a vein.
Related results
Bring your lipid profile so ApoA1 can be read alongside the cholesterol measurements.
[1]

What can the result mean?

Lower ApoA1 is associated with higher cardiovascular risk in population studies. A higher result can fit a more favorable pattern, but does not cancel out high ApoB, smoking, raised blood pressure, or other risks. It is not a stand-alone guarantee of protection. [1]

When is it useful, and how is it read?

Read it as part of a cardiovascular-risk assessment, with ApoB or the standard lipid profile and the person’s health history. A favorable ApoA1 result should not distract from other findings that may matter more to the care plan. [1]

What can affect it?

Genetics, liver health, hormones, and medicines can influence the value. ApoA1 is not a direct count of HDL particles because a particle can contain more than one ApoA1 protein. Lab intervals vary.

A common myth

Myth: «A high ApoA1 cancels out other heart risks»

ApoA1 is only one part of the lipid picture. It cannot erase the risk associated with a high burden of ApoB particles, smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes. [1]

Questions you might have

Is ApoA1 the same as HDL cholesterol?

No. ApoA1 measures a major HDL protein; HDL cholesterol measures the cholesterol carried in those particles. [1]

Does ApoA1 count every HDL particle?

No. Each particle can carry a different number of ApoA1 proteins, so it is not an exact particle count. [1]

What comes next?

Use the result within a full lipid and cardiovascular review. Your clinician can explain whether it adds anything beyond standard lipids and whether any action follows from the overall pattern.

A question to take with you

Does ApoA1 change my overall risk assessment, and how does it fit with ApoB and the rest of my lipids?
