What does it measure?
Thyroid cells make this protein as part of producing and storing thyroid hormones. Normal thyroid tissue can produce it, as can some thyroid cancers. The test is different from TSH or free T4 and does not tell us simply whether the thyroid is working well.
Before the test
- Sample
- A blood sample from a vein.
- Follow-up
- Bring previous values, treatment dates, and your supplement list; keep the test method consistent where possible.
What can the result mean?
After removal or treatment of the thyroid for certain cancers, changes in thyroglobulin can help guide follow-up. With a thyroid still present, a higher value has many possible explanations and does not diagnose cancer. A low value can be misleading if antibodies interfere. [1]
When is it useful, and how is it read?
After treatment for certain differentiated thyroid cancers, the question is whether the trend suggests remaining or returning thyroid tissue. A value taken while the thyroid is still present has a different meaning and cannot diagnose cancer. Read follow-up trends within the specialist’s treatment and imaging plan. [1]
What can affect it?
TSH stimulation, anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, and changes in the assay can alter the reading. Comparisons are more useful when the collection conditions and laboratory method are consistent. [1]
Myth: «Thyroglobulin is a general thyroid-cancer screening test»
Normal thyroid cells make thyroglobulin too. Its strongest role is in selected follow-up after treatment, when the amount of thyroid tissue remaining is known, rather than screening an intact thyroid for cancer. [1]
Questions you might have
Can thyroglobulin screen a healthy thyroid for cancer?
No. Its main role is follow-up in selected thyroid conditions, especially after treatment for certain thyroid cancers. [1]
Why use the same laboratory for follow-up?
Different methods can give different readings, which may make the trend harder to interpret. [1]
What comes next?
Confirm the clinical purpose before ordering this test as part of a general checkup. If you are in thyroid-cancer follow-up, review the result with your specialist alongside imaging and antibody measurements when indicated. [1]
What thyroid tissue remains in my situation, and are antibodies affecting this measurement?
