Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)

FSH is a signal from the brain to the ovaries or testes; we interpret it alongside their response.

What does it measure?

The pituitary gland makes follicle-stimulating hormone. In the ovaries it supports follicle development; in the testes it supports sperm production. A blood measurement may help investigate irregular periods, fertility concerns, delayed puberty, or suspected changes in reproductive hormone function. [1]

Before the test

Sample
A blood sample from a vein.
Cycle timing
If you menstruate, confirm the collection day chosen for your assessment and record the cycle day.
[1]

What can the result mean?

High FSH can mean the ovaries or testes need stronger stimulation. It rises naturally after menopause. Low or inappropriately ordinary FSH, when sex hormones are low, may point toward reduced signaling from the brain. One result does not measure egg quality or guarantee fertility. [1]

When is it useful, and how is it read?

High FSH with low estradiol suggests a different ovarian-feedback pattern from low or inappropriately normal FSH with low estradiol. In a testicular assessment, FSH is considered with LH and testosterone. Age, symptoms, and the purpose of testing decide which pattern matters. [1] [2] [3]

What can affect it?

FSH changes with age, cycle phase, pregnancy, and hormonal medicines. In someone who menstruates, the useful sampling time depends on the question and cycle pattern. Estradiol, LH, symptoms, and medical history add context that the isolated number cannot provide. [1]

An interesting fact

FSH cannot predict your chance of pregnancy by itself

FSH can contribute to an assessment of ovarian reserve, but reserve is not the same as egg quality or a prediction of natural pregnancy. A result should not become a stand-alone label for someone’s fertility. [2]

Questions you might have

Does FSH measure egg quality?

No. Ovarian-reserve testing concerns the remaining egg pool and treatment response; it does not directly measure egg quality or guarantee pregnancy. [2]

Why is estradiol sometimes read with FSH?

An early rise in estradiol can lower FSH and make a result look reassuring. Cycle timing and the paired result make the picture clearer. [2]

What comes next?

Ask how the test will guide a decision before arranging repeated measurements. Your clinician may repeat FSH under planned conditions or select a different fertility assessment. Do not stop contraception or hormone therapy simply to obtain a test unless your prescribing clinician advises it. [1]

A question to take with you

Does this FSH level match my life stage and the other reproductive hormone results?
